Asthma is a chronic condition that causes episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath. The symptoms are due to a temporary contraction in the muscle of the breathing passages, which swell and fill with mucus. Symptoms of asthma range from mild to severe and may come on suddenly and dramatically or gradually worsen with increasing difficulty in breathing. An attack may be as brief as five minutes or last for days on end. Since asthma is quite frightening and may cause death, sometimes it is so severe that allopathic drugs are appropriate and necessary in spite of Ayurvedic treatment.

Ayurveda recognizes 3 types of asthma
Vata - type asthma is worse in the evening and is characterized by dryness and coldness, spasms in the bronchial tree, but no inflammation. It may be accompanied by constipation and intestinal gas.
Pitta - type asthma appears at midday and is characterized by bronchitis, a burning pain in the chest, fever, nausea, vomiting and irritability.
Kapha- type asthma occurs in the early morning and late evening and is characterized by increased and plentiful bronchial secretions, profuse expectoration with wheezing and is accompanied by a cough, runny nose, sinus congestion, sweaty hands and feet, and tears in the eyes.

Make sure you do the deep abdominal breathing exercise and yoga sun salutation, which are very helpful between attacks. Meditation is relaxing and can be helpful for  prevention. Drinking plenty of fluids helps loosen mucus and replaces water loss due to heavy breathing and increased perspiration.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Sesame oil, mustard oil, cinnamon, cardamom, fresh grated ginger, jaggery (brown sugar) powdered clove.

Sinusitis is a swelling of the sinus cavities, the open space in your skull above the eyes, within the nose and inside the cheekbones. During a cold and allergic reaction the mucous membrane lining the sinus, may become swollen. This blocks the opening leading from the sinus to the nose, causing pressure, pain, congestion, headache, tenderness, or a sense of heaviness behind the eyes and nose, and fever. Take it easy and get rest. If the sinusitis is severe, use a vaporizer, humidifier, or bowl of steaming water to loosen mucus and relieve sinus congestion. Wet, hot compresses applied to the painful area may also be soothing. Drink plenty of fluids to help liquify mucous secretions.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Triphala, guggul (commiphora mukul), ginger paste, ghee. Osha, echinacea, guduchi, vacha, calamus root, sitopladi, turmeric .

Acute or chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of your bronchi (airways that connect the windpipe and lungs) and is characterized by persistent cough. Acute bronchitis is usually a bacterial infection that follows a virus. Chronic bronchitis is most common in smokers and those living near a polluted area.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Cinnamon, fresh grated ginger, cardamom, jaggery, ashwaghanda and triphala

A mouth ulcer is simply an inflamed spot in the lining of the mouth. In Ayurveda it means there is an excess of toxins within the tract, and a loss of immunity. Mouth ulcers could occur in various forms :- Aphthous or Traumatic ulcers - These are simple ulcers, pale yellow and sensitive spots with red borders, that sting when spicy food is eaten.
Cold Sores - These are blisters within the mouth which could later spread to the outside of the mouth
Oral Thrush - This comprises sore patches that could also occur in the throat
Oral Lichen Planus - In this disorder a number of small pimples erupt, which grow and join together to form a network of ulcerated mouth lining.

Avoid spicy foods. Recommended foods are those rich in Vitamin C and B Complex.

A toothache is a pain along the nerves enclosed within the tooth. The pain occurs because these nerves become inflamed and sensitive. Very often this inflammation is related to inflammation of the surrounding gums, as in gingivitis or abscesses. If the tooth that is aching is very badly decayed, it will have to be removed.

The health and strength of the teeth depends a lot on the state of the gums. If the gums are healthy and strong , teeth too will be healthy and will be able to repulse the bacteria that are constantly prone to multiply when left over food particles get stuck in the cavities.

There is tooth decay on eating food that is very sweet, cold or hot. In the beginning the toothache is mild but at a later stage the episodes of pain last longer. There could also be a unpleasant taste in the mouth due to dead bacteria cells in the area, and a swelling in the gums, signifying that the infection is progressing. In case of very advanced decay the tooth has to be removed.

Gingivitis is a condition where the gums are chronically inflamed. They become swollen, bleed easily and get infected by bacteria. According to Ayurveda, bleeding gums is an indication of improper toxin evacuation and loss of healthy tonicity of the mucous membranes within the system.

Bleeding gums could be aggravated by the presence of tartar on the teeth, as it is an irritant. Teeth should be cleaned regularly, if your teeth are prone to collect tartar.

In mild cases, there may be occasional bleeding, especially on brushing the teeth, and also a metallic taste in the mouth from time to time. In more severe cases the gums could become spongy. They could also recede. Chronically inflamed and weakened gums gradually loose their grip on the teeth and the teeth loosens in the socket.

As with any other organ or part of the body, salivary glands become infected when their immunity is less than it should be. Poisonous substances in the food could trigger this. The glands become swollen and painful. Cervical glands may also enlarge in reaction.

The tongue can tell us a lot about the inner situation of the body. Formerly the physician would check, as part of his routine in diagnosis - the eyes, nose, nails, throat, mouth and tongue of the patient, for all of them would give him clues about the internal condition of the patient. All tongue troubles are usually symptoms, mirroring deeper problems in the digestive tract. The cures given above are basic. The oesophagus has to pass through a hole in the diaphragm to reach the stomach. A Hiatus Hernia arises when muscles around the hole weaken and the esophagus at that area loses support. This causes inflammation and swelling. As a result excess acids from the stomach may well up into the oesophagus. Factors that could lead to Hiatus Hernia would be wrong eating habits, like eating hastily without proper masticating the food, and swallowing large morsels of food almost forcefully. It would be worse when the system lacks lubrication, or the food itself is rather dry.

This refers to the condition when the nerves that control muscles at the lower end of the oesophagus become defective, due to a loss in their elasticity. Excessive smoking and excessive alcohol intake could promote achalasia, so also prolonged and excessive physical or mental tension.

It happens when it becomes thick and hard and looses elasticity. It could occur most often in elderly people. There could be difficulty in swallowing or occasional heartburn. A lack of proper lubrication in the oesophagus could bring upon stricture.

The cures given above are basic. If you still do not feel better, we suggest that you meet a doctor or have an appointment with our Online Doctor. Click here for more details for an Online Consultation

The state of your skin reflects your inner health, particularly that of your digestive system. Clearing up skin disorder is an inside as well as an outside job. If you have chronic skin problems you need to regulate your digestive system, restore your digestive fire, cleanse and strengthen your liver, cleanse and oil your skin and remove old skin daily. Stress is often a factor in skin eruptions and therefore meditation is a cornerstone treatment for skin conditions. You may have to wear protective rubber gloves for hand washing of clothes or dishes. Avoid strong soaps.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Turmeric powder, vidanga, ghee, honey, warm water.

These conditions are associated with aging, but dry, tight feeling and even itchy skin can appear at any age. Most wrinkles are traceable to overexposure to the sun. But dehydrated, poorly lubricated skin lets wrinkles take hold and exaggerate their appearance.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Brahmi(gotu kala), ghee juice of parsley, triphala , yogaraj, and shatavri.

The sign of acne - red, inflamed pimples, whiteheads, blackheads - occur when oil glands produce too much oil that contains ama, the toxic by-product of poorly digested food such as junk food. Bacteria on the skin interact with the sebum and cause abscesses to form inflammation and plugging up of the hair follicles near the glands. Infection may set in which may cause scars

HERBAL REMEDIES: Turmeric powder, chickpea powder, neem leaves.

An allergy is commonly defined as a reaction of the immune system to something in your environment. A healthy immune system recognizes and destroys potentially harmful foreign infectious invaders such as bacteria and viruses of noninfectious irritants such as pollen, dust or animal dander. An allergic person reacts more strongly to these substances than normal.

The ayurvedic system does not emphasize a precise diagnosis; rather it sees the allergic condition as a break down in the digestive process. The accumulation of ama or waste, clogs the channels of the body and your nervous, hormonal and immune systems miscommunicate This leads to a generalized system of alarm in the body.

The treatment can be done with decentralization to the offending substances. This is accompanied by clearing of ama through proper diet and food, increasing the digestive fire, and restoring the immune system with herbs and the five senses therapy.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Copper water, powdered cumin and coriander, triphala The cures given above are basic. If you still do not feel better, we suggest that you meet a doctor or have an appointment with our Online Doctor. Click here for more details for an Online Consultation

Anger is a very useful instinctual emotion that arises from the frustration of a basic need not being met. Up to a certain point it is positive and healthy to feel and express your anger, because it indicates you have the will to live. Vata, pitta and kapha types all express anger. However this emotion is usually attributed to a pitta imbalance since the elements of fire and water are at play when anger is expressed. Fiery enzymes and digestive juices are either over stimulated or under stimulated in a person who tends to become angry frequently. Ayurveda helps you to deal with anger, whether it expresses itself as a screaming match with your boss, your spouse, your parents, your teenager or your friend. Such angry encounters can leave us shaking with indignation, sleeplessness and obsessive about the conversation for days afterwards. These are normal reactions and part of the healing process. Such acute reactions will subside naturally and are not to be confused with those of the chronically angry person who is abusive and volatile in social situations.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Shatavri (Asparagus racemosus), saraswati (women) or ashwaghanda (withania somnifera), saraswati (men) , cilantro.

Life is full of experiences that may cause some people to become temporaily fearful. Even people we consider to be psychologically strong and healthy may be prone to pre-exam jitters or pre-interview nerves. A person may fretabout an upcoming wedding, giving a speech or presentation, or performing in a concert, play, or competition.

Ayurveda sees anxiety and fear as a classic vata imbalance. The electrical energy of vata becomes dehydrated and starts behaving like static electricity, and the mind acquires an unnecessary charge that is perceivedas fear and anxiety. Ayurveda can soothe both adults and children through the emotional ill effects of such specific crisis. Some conditions requireprofessional evaluation.

Relaxation techniques are tools that help us consciously relax for a short period every day and can help calm fears. Meditation, exercise, yoga and deep breathing are proven and effective ways to reach a state of relaxation.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Jatamansi (Nordostachys jatamansi) and Brahmi (gotu kola).

Argumentativeness is a sign of a pitta imbalance. While pitta's strength is its ability to discriminate, too much pitta will cause the mind to get struck in a judgemental mode and tip towards too much discrimination. The mind becomes overheated, causing aggravation and the need to release the hot
energy by becoming picky, disagreeable and quarrelsome.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Saraswati and arjuna (Terminalia arjuna),triphala, herb tea.

Although confusion, poor concentration and forgetfulness are equated with getting older, these annoying conditions can happen to anyone at any age. Mid-sentence you completely lose your train of thought, you meet someone for the first time and immediately forget his or her name and having just entered a room, you can't
figure out why you went there. A possibility may be that your brain is not getting much of oxygen or nutrients or you may be stressing your mind a lot. It may also be due to poor sleep patterns. Yoga helps in refreshing the mind. There are many ways and tricks to improve memory and jogging your memory is just like jogging your body - you need to exercise it in order to develp it fully ( read new books, meet new people, attend lectures and group discussions)

HERBAL REMEDIES: Jetamansi, sarsaluti, trikatu, yogaraj guggulu

A phobia is an intense fear of a particular object or situation. Almost any thing can be a target of a phobia - snakes, public speaking, heights, spiders, crowds, blood, open spaces, enclosed spaces etc. Phobias are said to be related to a phenomenon in which a person has an association or memory of the phobic object with an unpleasant or life-threatening event.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Ashwagandha ghee, fennel-carrot juice, brahmi ghee.

Insomnia can become a chronic and vicious cycle. The less sleep you get, the less well you are able to deal with stress and the more difficult it is to fall or stay asleep. Chronic insomnia can also result from chronic anxiety, fear, tension, depression, and other psychological problems. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages in the evening, avoid caffeine several hours before going to bed, keep the bedroom for two things: Sleep and Sex - but no mind activity, avoid exercise at night and wear earplugs if your bedroom is noisy. Some people feel daytime naps help, others find they make it more difficult to sleep at night, so experiment to see to which group you belong.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Ashwaghanda, jatamansi, brahmi, jaggery, cardamom and ghee.

Grief and sadness are part of everyone's life because at some point we all lose  someone or something we care about. It could be the death of a loved one, a job loss or the end of a love relationship etc. Ayurveda has several remedies that support our own healing efforts during times of such acute crisis. These remedies are able to soothe us when our feelings are still new and most raw and painful. The expression of these natural feelings helps heal the injury of the loss and releases us to face the future with better balance. Remember, emotions help you heal, so don't "beat yourself up" for feeling the way you do. Take time to pray, meditate, contemplate and honor
your loss. You might also feel better in the company of people and talking to them.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), saraswati, triphala, and vata tea

Migraines consist of two phases. In phase One, the blood vessels constrict and the brain receives less blood, leading to an early warning sign called an aura. Most often the aura consists of visual disturbances such as visions of light, bright geometric shapes and lines, and tunnel vision. It also includes dizziness, slurred speech or ringing in the ears. It may also include nausea, vomiting, chills, and extreme fatigue. As the next phase occurs, the blood vessels open abnormally wide, which stimulates the nerves in the blood vessel walls. The pain begins, and is usually accompanied by extreme fatigue. A migraine may last for hours or days and most often affect women. Such headaches tend to run in families. Migraine may be triggered by hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to foods. If you have persistent migraine headaches, allergies are an important consideration. Also at play may be alcohol, bright lights, loud noises, hormonal fluctuation as may occur with the menstrual cycle and some drugs.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Brahmi (gotu kola), ashwaghanda(withania somnifera), shatavri (Asparagus racemosus), cinnamon, ghee, bananas and cardamom seeds.

Although low energy and fatigue are often viewed as inevitable signs of aging, a healthy body at any age supports a healthy, active mind. Fatigue and low energy are often signs of our bodies crying out for help. Eating too much, especially fatty foods or refined carbohydrates, can make you feel lethargic, as can inadequate vitamins and minerals, particularly not enough of the B-vitamins, iron, manganese, phosphorus, and potassium. Make every effort to kick the caffine habit. Get active - lying down like a couch potato doesn't conserve energy, it actually makes you more tired and lethargic.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Brahmi(gotu kola),Jatamansi(Nardostachys jatamansi), ghee, and ginger. The cures given above are basic. If you still do not feel better, we suggest that you meet a doctor or have an appointment with our Online Doctor. Click here for more details for an Online Consultation

When continuously exposed to destructive action of acids, a raw spot develops, which is called ulcer. Ulcer usually occurs in the stomach or duodenum, since these are the areas most open to the direct action of acids and bile.

Symptoms of Stomach Ulcer
7 Localized, burning or gnawing pain in the abdomen or chest.
7 The pain is present before as well as after a meal.
7 It is accompanied with nausea.
7 Loss of appetite and a consequent loss of weight.
7 Occasional vomiting of acid fluid which affords temporary relief from pain.

Symptoms of Duodenal Ulcer
7 Pain usually occurs several hours after a meal and resembles hunger pangs
7 Pain can be relieved by taking milk or a few biscuits
7 Bloated sensation after eating
7 Vomiting may also occur

Colic is an intense stomach pain, most commonly due to indigestion or gas accumulation. Abdominal pain could also occur due to other reason. A few of them are given below.
  • Gall Colic - This occurs due to presence of gallstone in the gallbladder. There is intense pain in the right abdomen or between the shoulder blades. This is accompanied by nausea or vomiting.
  • Renal colic - This pain is due to stones in the kidneys. The pain is felt in the back around the region of the kidneys. Then if the stone travels down the ureters to the bladder, the pain follows its course down, around the front of the body and thense to the groin.
  • Appendicitis - The pain usually comes on suddenly, in the lower right side of the abdomen, which is very sensitive to touch.
  • Menstrual colic - The pain is spasmodic and in the lower part of the abdomen or visceral area. It most probably occurs due to insufficient blood in the walls of the uterus, as it contracts and churns to shred it's endometrium.

When the abdomen distends and there may be intestinal or abdominal gas, is the cardinal sign of dysfunction on the agni - the digestive fire and is usually caused by a vata imbalance. In Ayurveda we describe it as a first sign of imbalance. In the gastrointestinal consciousness, bloating occurs when the gastrointestinal tract is unable to split food into the smallest particles and release the nourishing enzymes into the system  HERBAL REMEDIES: Triphala treats the entire digestive tract.

Much abdominal pain is due to indigestion, which has symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, burping and intestinal gas is sometimes accompanied by pain mainly on the left side under the ribcage. The most commonly recognized signs of indigestion are "gas" and heaviness in the abdomen. Gas is universally looked upon as an embarrassment and many of us avoid foods like pulses and potato that produce gas. Gas is a natural by-product of digestion and metabolism, and every system produces a certain amount in the process of digestion. But in a healthy system gas either gets diluted, or dissolved and is eliminated from the body through the large intestine and other outlets. Some people complain that on eating potatoes, they get gas. But according to Ayurveda, that is the function of the potato to stimulate the collection of isolated gas pockets and bring them all to the gas chamber - the stomach from where they can be more easily expelled. Each individual has his/her own unique constitution and is or is not able to digest certain foods accordingly. Once you have noticed your own system's definite inability to digest particular foods (which will be peculiar to yourself alone), an Ayurvedic remedy could be found by taking this into account which would correct the fault in your metabolism

HERBAL REMEDIES: You can use one of the following:Shatavri (Asparagus racemosus), guduchi (Tinospora cardifolia) and Kamadudha grated ginger and ghee.

It is the result of indigestion. If you have poor digestion, you compromise the absorption and assimilation of food. According to Ayurveda your digestive system begins to increase the digestive liquid and fire to compensate and your system becomes overheated. This in turn creates acidity in the stomach.

Hyperacidity is an excess of acidity within the digestive tract. The digestive acids are either produced in too great a quantity, or they are highly concentrated. Hypoacidity is a deficiency of acidity within the digestive tract, both of quality and quantity.

The quantity or quality of acids or bile that you, as an individual require, depends on your own personal needs, activities, lifestyle and eating habits. The level of enzyme production should be automatically regulated by the body itself if it is healthy.

The sufferer could have a burning pain in the stomach which might be relieved to some extent by eating. There is nausea and vomiting. Digestion is poor - causing abdominal distention and frequent belching. There could also be frontal headaches. If you are prone to hyperacidity, avoid food that is rich in fat, deep fried or oily. Also avoid cakes, pastries, biscuits and chocolates. Incorporate more natural fresh fruits and their juices in your every day diet.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Shatavri (Asparagus racemosus), fennel tea

Ayurveda considers chronic bad breath to be a digestive disorder. This pitta disorder is treated by restoring the digestive fire in the belly and the digestive juices of the mouth. It is important to eat your food when it is hot.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Triphala and trikatu

Constipation - difficult, incomplete or frequent bowel movements- is one of the many side effects of too much civilization. Contributing factors are a diet that over emphasizes hard-to-digest foods or food combinations. Too little exercise, too much tension and stress or over-stimulation of the nervous system. Watch your diet - eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and beans to add natural fiber. Avoid white flour and sugar, as well as cheese and meat. Drink adequate fluids.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Triphala, psyllium husks, senna or flaxseed , haritaki and salt

Prolonged diarrhea poses the danger of dehydration, especially in infants when it is accompanied with vomiting and sweating due to fever. Ayurvedic remedies usually helps the digestive tract return to normal. Home care revolves around replacing lost fluids, and slow, gentle reintroduction of easily digested foods. During a bout of diarrhea, limit eating for upto 12 hours and gradually increase fluid intake to replace the water the body has lost. Avoid milk and fatty products.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Triphala, ghee, powdered ginger, fennel powder, roasted cumin.

The main symptom is often bloodstained diarrhoea. Also there could be a mucous discharge in the stools. Dysentery is a result of unchecked multiplication of microbial parasites within the tract. They adhere to the depleted mucous lining and eat up large areas. As a result the inner blood vessels are exposed and break easily, releasing blood. When the microbes are amoeba , it is called Amoebic Dysentery. The amoeba live mainly in the lining of the colon, creating ulcers. They could also travel up the tract and reach the liver, which, if it is weak, could succumb to the infection. The result : Hepatitis or an abscess of the liver. In Ayurveda, no matter what the label, dysentery or chronic diarrhoea is a sign of lowered immunity of the body's defenses, with the weak spot being the liver and intestines. Therefore efforts should be to strengthen the body's defenses rather than only to supply help from the outside.

An ulcer is an erosion of the lining of the stomach or intestine, which is associated with a breakdown of the mucus, a barrier that normally protects the stomach from powerful digestive acids. Often at times, stress contributes to ulcer formation. Smoking also increases the risk and worsens the condition. Other factors include eating irregular meals, consumption of alcohol and many common drugs.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Shatavri (Asparagus racemosus), guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), aloe vera gel, cabbage leaves, pineapple slices.

It is the inflammation of the appendix. This in many cases, could be due to a chronically overloaded colon related to a digestive problem. When the digestive function of the intestines is impaired and the mucous membranes have lost their elasticity, they are unable to move the waste matter along efficiently. Toxins get accumulated in the appendix, which cannot be released into the choked colon, hence the appendix becomes swollen, irritated and inflamed.

The main symptom of acute appendicitis is severe abdominal pain, which starts as a vague discomfort then becomes localised to the right lower side of the region of the abdomen.

Most people who suffer from backaches never pinpoint the exact cause. It may be a specific injury due to overexertion or sudden movement, or a lifelong posture problem finally catching up with you or it might occur after staying in an unusual or uncomfortable position for a prolonged period of time.

Ayurvedic practices and remedies can prevent back pain and speed healing of acute back pain due to injury. Make strong efforts to practice yoga regularly and deep and alternate-nostril breathing daily. Get adequate rest - be in bed by 10 p.m. and up by 6 a.m. If you have a sedentary job or life, sit less often - sitting puts a strain on your lower back. Change positions as often as possible. Lie down to read, stand to talk on the phone, and shift positions and take frequent breaks to move your back. Lose
weight if you are overweight . When lifting heavy weights bend from the knees and not from the waist. If you are having back pain, apply wet heat to subside the pain. Never use dry heat on your skin as it can dehydrate the tissue.

HERBAL REMEDIES: Triphala, beet, cucumber and parsley juice.
Health Unravelled - Comprehensive Camp on Backpain (26th September, 2009 to 17th October, 2009) AND (13th Feb., 2010 to 4th March, 2010)

In Ayurveda. underweight and overweight are signs that vata, pitta, and kapha systems are out of balance. Both can occur, regardless of how much or how little food you eat, because your intake is not being properly metabolized. Many people seek medical advice on various other problems but don't mention their weight because they have become so discouraged about it. They invariably are pleasantly surprised to find that excess pounds come off naturally. If you have been struggling with your weight for quite some time, you too, may be feeling hopeless. Perhaps you have counted calories, followed the latest popular diet that promises you will shed twenty pounds in twenty minutes, and have experienced the terrible sensation of feeling just a little hungry all the time. The Ayurvedic approach to achieving your ideal weight is not just a matter of counting calories and watching the food you eat, but it is about getting to know your body and being in tune with its rhythms. It means taking a realistic look at your body type and what it can be, and then nourishing it back to natural health. Those who are overweight should include ginger, papaya, mango, pineapple, bitter melons, and dark bitter greens. Exercise is a must.

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR UNDERWEIGHT: Ginger treatment, to calm the nervous system jatamansi and vacha .

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR OVERWEIGHT: Chitrak (plumbago zeylonica), Kukti, and Trikatu

As men grow older they tend to have problems with the prostate, the walnut-sized gland that produces the fluid that carries sperm. The prostate lies close to the bladder, where urine is stored, and surrounds the urethra, the tube through which urine leaves the body. Prostatitis is an inflammation of this gland. The symptoms of acute inflammation are an urge to urinate frequently, a burning sensation during
urination, difficulty starting to urinate, fever, weakness and pain in the area of the prostate which may spread to the genitals, pelvis, or further up the back. Acute prostatitis is often due to a bacterial infection. The chronic form of this condition may also develop where there is no bacterial infection. For self care - drink large amounts of fluids to dilute urine and help wash out the bacteria. Avoid coffee, black tea and highly seasoned foods and get plenty of rest.

Haemorrhoids are varicose veins of the anus, which lie close to the anal orifice, just under the mucous lining. They develop due to the increased pressure while straining the anal sphincter. The veins in the anus become swollen/twisted and thin-walled and could be ruptured by the pressure of faeces. One of the symptoms is blood and/or mucous in the faeces. Bowel movements are uncomfortable and painful. External or protruding haemorrhoids could itch and also be excruciatingly painful. The pain can last for hours after every stool. Sometimes, the haemorrhoids protrude after stool and make Movements difficult. Haemorrhoids are due to sluggish circulation and lack of exercise. There is a constant tendency to accumulate toxins in the system, hence constipation is usually a major aspect of the persons constitution.

The liver is the largest single organ in the body, and one of the most important too. It has a profound effect on almost every activity of our body. Apart from producing a digestive juice it processes and stores nutrients, and releases them into the bloodstream for the use of body cells.

This results from excessive bile in the stomach and duodenum, which generates great heat. The symptoms are commonly a frontal headache, which may come and go, usually better with sleep. In stronger attacks the headache intensifies and nausea comes on which also keeps intensifying until the person vomits, after which he feels much better. Hyperbiliousness could result from improper food (too oily, spicy, stale, or poisonous). It  could also occur when the liver malfunctions due to hepatitis, cirrhosis or any other digestive disorders that affect the liver too, as well as excessive mental or emotional tension.

Jaundice is not a disorder but a symptom of a disorder. Diseases of the liver or gallbladder like hepatitis, cirhosis, tumours, and obstruction by gallstones could produce jaundice. Jaundice can also result from excessive drug intake and blood transfusion. The major characteristics of jaundice are yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes or / and vomiting attacks. Urine also becomes dark in color. Avoid completely, all non-vegetarian preparations, and even heavy vegetarian ones. Avoid cakes, pastries, chocolates, ice creams and synthetic/ aerated drinks. Avoid alcohol of any sort.

The liver becomes likely to be inflamed only when it is weak through constant stress and irregular habits. It is rarely that we are born with a weak liver. Hepatitis could be an uncomplicated inflammation, or accompanied with infection. Persons who are affected by tropical fevers such as malaria, filaria, typhoid, kala-azar etc. and chronic amoebiasis, suffer from inflammatory situation of the liver.
Hepatitis may also be accompanied and affected by other problems of the digestive tract, like ileitis, colitis and amoebiasis. The visible effects of the inflammation could be acute or chronic. The diet in acute hepatitis is similar to that mentioned for jaundice. In chronic hepatitis it would be advisable to avoid non-vegetarian food, deep fried food, pastries, chocolates and ice-creams for the patient to greatly benefit from a bland diet.

Anaemia is a deficiency of red blood cells, or of Haemoglobin which is carried in red blood cells. There are several reasons why this could occur. There could be a fault in the production of haemoglobin, or of the red blood cells, or the rate of destruction of the red blood cells may be usually high, or there could be a decrease in the quantity of blood itself due to haemorrhage. Anaemia could be a temporary condition in those who suffer heavy bleeding during menstruation. It is also very common among pregnant women, and more so in the later stages of pregnancy.

Gallstones are crystals of bile sediment, very concentrated in cholesterol, which form in the gall bladder over a period of time. Highly concentrated bile has sediments which drop to the bottom of the gallblader as tiny crystals. Over a period of time these accumulate and stick together becoming larger and larger. They normally adhere to the bottom of the gallbladder, but from time to time they could detach themselves and move into the bile duct and get stuck, blocking the passage of bile and causing pain.

One of the symptoms of blockage by a gallstone is gall-colic, which is an intense pain in the upper right hand side of the abdomen, or sometimes between the shoulder blades. The pain increases over a few hours and peaks, and then fades, if the stone falls back or passes into the duodenum. This is accompanied by nausea and vomiting due to the sudden rush of bile. It can also be accompanied by fever.

MANAGEMENT OF CANCER - Herbal approaches

Cancer should be called a symptom rather than a disease. It indicates the abnormal uncontrolled and rapid growth of cells. Cancer cells differ from normal biological cells mainly in 2 ways.
1. So long as the host is alive cancer cells are also alive and rapidly multiply themselves to form new cancer cells.
2. In case of ordinary cells they after a cycle decay automatically

There are more than 100 types of cancer. But broadly speaking they are of 2 types
1.Caricinoma, meaning malignant new growth made up of epithelial cells tending to infilterate surrounding tissues and give rise to metastasis.
2. Sarcoma means cancer arising in bones, connective tissue or muscle.

There are 3 methods for treating cancer.
1. Surgery
2 .Radiation therapy which affects normal and cancerous tissues equally
3 Chemotherapy with some effects

. Any sore that does not heal
7 A lump or thickening in the breast or elsewhere
7 Unusual bleeding or discharge
7 Persistent hoarseness or cough
7 Any change in normal bowel habits.

Apparent cause is chewing of tobacco and tobacco products, pollution and exposure to radiations otherwise in most cases the cause is unknown.

Cholesterol is a normal part of your body tissues, particularly found in the blood, brain tissue, liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, and the covers around nerve fibers. In Ayurveda high cholesterol is seen primarily as a pitta disorder. Pitta is responsible for assimilation of food and all experiences; it creates the red blood cells and controls the system of veins that carries blood to the heart. If food is not digested and assimilated and the blood vessels are not properly maintained, the channels of the heart becomes
clogged. Food combination that are said to raise cholesterol are melons with grains, eggs with milk, and milk with bananas. A program of yoga, stress, reduction, and low fat vegetarian diet can help to reverse clogged arteries.

The pancreas is a cone-shaped organ, situated below the liver and behind the
stomach. It has 2 distinct functions :
1. It produces digestive juices that trickle through the pancreatic duct
into the duodenum and help in the break down of starches, proteins and fats.
2. It also secretes hormones that regulate the amount of sugar available in
the blood stream.

Diabetes is a disorder of sugar metabolism. Body cells need glucose to provide energy for their various activities-growth, maintenance, defense etc. The liver stores sugar in the form of glycogen and releases it as glucose when the body needs it. Glucose travels through the bloodstream and is absorbed from it by the body cells. In a diabetic person, however, glucose is released into the bloodstream, but the cells are unable to absorb it for their use. The diet for diabetic must necessarily preclude direct sugar and sweet food products like chocolates, cakes etc. Alcohol, which is very high in sugar contents, should be avoided. It is also recommended to avoid food high in
starch and calories, like potatoes, dried nuts etc.  There are 2 main types of diabetes:

An uncommon disorder in which excess urine is formed due to failure of the pituitary gland's hormonal secretion antidiuretic hormone (ADH). The primary defect may be in the pituitary gland itself or in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain floor that controls secretion of the hormone. This defect is corrected by giving ADH by injection or snuff or nasal drops.

Diabetes mellitus or simply diabetes, is the result of a deficiency of insulin. The deficiency can be caused in more than one way, hence diabetes is a group of diseases with similar symptoms, and not a single disease. The effects of diabetes are far reaching. There could be excess of glucose in the blood, overflow of glucose into urine, and increased volume of urine to carry the glucose. Because glucose cannot be burnt, fat is burnt instead and the patient loses weight. Diabetes are also susceptible to disease of large arteries with its complications such as angina. This may due to disturbed fat chemistry.

Hypoglycemia occurs when you have too little sugar in your blood. As a result you feel weak, headachy, hungry, and anxious; you may have problems with your vision, loose your muscle coordination, and have personality changes. The usual explanation is that the pancreas is releasing too much insulin, which lowers the sugar in the blood, or you that are eating too little food. Ayurveda seeks to restore digestive health to normalize blood sugar levels.

Periodic (monthly) bleeding in women of child bearing age (menses). When a girl is born her ovaries contain the rudiments of upto half a million eggs (ova) which lie dormant until puberty. From then until the menopause ( a condition wherein menstruation stops in women, normally at around 45 years of age) some 30 years later, an ovum is released and ovum ripens in a sort of shell, the Graafian follicle. Only the ovum, a single cell, is released. The follicle remains in the ovary and grows into a small endocrine gland, corpusluteum.

The corpus- luteum produces a hormone , progesterone, that stimulates the lining of the uterus to form a thick layer, with an abundant circulation of blood ready to receive an embryo if the ovum becomes fertilized. An embryo forms a hormone that keeps the corpus luteum in being and so preserves the enriched lining of the uterus. But if the ovum is not fertilized the corpus luteum withers in two weeks time, and the uterus deprived of progesterone sheds its lining. The average loss of blood during a menstrual period is about 60ml. As soon as the bleeding is over the lining of the uterus regenerates and some two weeks later the cycle begins again with the release of another ovum.

Pain with the menstrual periods, mainly in the lower abdomen or the small back. Secondary dysmenorrhoea in women who have previously had normal periods can arise from a whole range of gynaecological disorders, and is treated by identifying and dealing with the cause.

Absence of menstrual periods. It means the state of girls before puberty and women after the menopause. There is primary and secondary amenorrhoea. Primary amenorrhoea is when girls have late periods and secondary amenorrhoea means a girl who has periods before has stopped having them. Each of the cases needs full investigation because some defect may need attention.

Excess of white or colourless secretion from the vagina. It may be only an exaggeration of the normal secretion or a symptom of irritation anywhere in the genital organ.
